Rycroft Drainage

We Had our house altered in 1995 and since then have had a really strong smell of damp and mustiness.
We are on a steep grade and the houses back corner is dug into the bank and this is where the smell is coming from.
We suspect there is possibly some drainage issues or something.
There is access under this part of the house but I'm personably unable to get in there as I'm in my 70's.
I need advise please.
