Patching wooden floor

I have an old house with a stunning wooden floor, but there are areas that have been filled with a concrete-like substance, though softer than concrete. I'd like to hear from anyone who could advise me on lifting floorboards from under the carpet in another room (which I intend to re-carpet) to use to replace the concrete.
