extend existing bookcase with new unit

I've got a bookshelf that fits an awkward space, and beside it was another one that didn't make best use of the area. I'd like a new bookshelf to fit, about 97.5 cm width, 42 cm deep and up to 200 or max 220 high. This unit might accommodate a hifi / CD player but mostly for books of various sizes. Perhaps better to be able to adjust the shelving heights. The design would be quite plain but strong enough to hold the books. The existing shelving is a sort of light wash, a bit like limewash, with the grain showing through. However, if it was more appropriate to use MDF then we could paint the old shelf to match if it was easier. I'm looking for practical and serviceable, but economical solution. It's a bach, so need to arrange a meeting when I'm there. Could be Saturday / Sunday 2 & 3rd March the best time. I'll be able to send through a photo of the space next weekend, if that helps.
