Dormer addition

Hi,
We are contemplating adding a large-ish dormer to our house.
It has a very high pitch roof and there seems to be a lot of space that we think could be utilised as a large occasional room room for our family. We think a flat dormer would be perfect.
What we really need to know is if:
First: it's possible
Second: we don't want to overcapitalise and spend more than the house is worth, so-to-speak.
We're right at the beginning of this journey and I guess that you'd need to have a look at the house, space, etc. to get a better idea of what needs to be done in order to give us an indication of cost, timeframes, etc.
