We are trying to rebuild a fireplace safety testing rig which consist of 2 walls, floor, and the ceiling as per AS/NZS 2918 Appendix B, all surfaces are to be lined with ≥ 15mm plywood with matt black paint finish. Ceiling will be supported by carport like structure, both walls will form a 90° angle and are movable between ceiling and floor, this will allow us to determine the minimum safety installation distance of the fireplace. All plywood will need framing support as they will be under heat stress during fireplace safety testing.
Main ceiling structure:
This would be a car port like structure with the span about 5 m x 5.5 m. It will need to handle the load with people walking on top of the structure for fireplace installation, and can support the 15mm plywood board lining. The ceiling will need to be 2.4m above the plywood floor, the plywood floor would be elevated ~100mm from the actual ground. The main structure plus ceiling panel assembly will need to be self-supporting without sag. The edge fall protection railing will be required for safety.
We would prefer nut& bolt fixing for the construction as there’s a possibility we will relocate workshop again.
Individual Ceiling frame with lining:
The 15mm plywood will be pre-fixed onto a supporting metal frame. The panel then can be fixed/attached placed on the main ceiling structure forming the entire ceiling. The size of plywood would be full sheet size, or which ever made the construction easier and cost effective.
One particular module will have a sacrificial panel with cut out profile for flue installation.
Floor module will be lined with 20mm plywood for structure purpose, sized 600mm x 600mm (half sheet). Metal framed to avoid warping under heat stress.
One particular floor module will need to support the fireplace itself, weight loading ranging from 80 kg – 500 kg. This floor module will need to be on the lockable swivel wheels. Other floor module will support with wooden pegs to the same height.
The height between the ceiling and floor surfaces is 2.4m +- 0.1m. The wall assembly will sit on the floor, supported with omni direction wheel for movement during testing. Gaps between wall and ceiling/floor will have drought stooping brush installed to stop the air movement.
The size will have the same width of a full sheet 15mm plywood but shorter in height to allow movement, a foldout triangle stand at rear to provide stability if required. Each panel assembly can be fixed to each other side by side forming one wall, with an additional horizontal beam braced from the back for structure strength during movement.
A 90° bracket that can allow 2 wall panels to form a 90° corner, forming 2 walls.
