There is a piece of 'dowling' that marries the underside of the roof to the gable ends of the house. One of these dowlings has decided to come loose and just needs reattaching. It's not a major job, but am having trouble getting anyone to do it. So will ask if they could ensure the dowling on the other side is fastened securely as well. I really have no idea how much it will cost, but can't see why it should cost a fortune.
