Job description

General Building
Kapiti Coast

I have had insulation inspectors visit to access for install insulation. They have reported that the access into the attic/roof-space is too small for product to pass through. They recommended to me that I cut a joist and extend the size of the opening. Timeframe: the insulators penciled me in for the 19th July, so before then is necessary. A bit of context: - I live in a 40's house which I believe has a hip roof. - the existing ceiling access is about 475 x 290mm, it is a squeeze to get through. I have broad shoulders and only manage to squeeze in. - I believe a single joist will need to be cut with the appropriate trimmers etc installed, but will defer to expert opinion. - I've measured the trimmer length of the new opening as being ~620mm - The opening is walled in on two sides, and has a beam on the other. It basically only leaves the option (though likely the expected one) of cutting the targeted joist (see picture for expected new opening). - Joists are about 52mm thickness and 104mm depth as measured. - There is a bracing element on the curtailed joist that might need to be moved (to a nearby joist?). - The header tank is nearby (on top of a load bearing wall I believe). It's pipes (exfil?) pass near but not over the expected new opening. Please see pictures for more context. The sketch is not to scale. It is just for context.
