If so, make sure you\u2019re employing a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.business.govt.nz\/lbp\">licensed building practitioner (LBP)<\/a> to do the job.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Restricted Building Work<\/h2>\n<p>LBP\u2019s may include designers, carpenters, brick and blocklayers, roofers, external plasterers, site and foundations specialists. They have been assessed as competent to complete work essential to a residential building&#8217;s structure, weather tightness and design of fire safety systems.<\/p>\n<p>Because this work is so important, it\u2019s only allowed to be done by licensed building practitioners (LBPs). LBPs are assessed before getting licensed, and have to maintain their skills to keep their license. A LBP is licensed in a similar fashion to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.business.govt.nz\/lbp\/the-board\/overview\/other-licensing-schemes\">licensed plumbers, electricians, architects and engineers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Restricted Building Work (RBW) can only be done or supervised by tradespeople who have proven they are properly skilled \u2013 licensed building practitioners (LBPs).<\/p>\n<p>It is an offense for an unlicensed person to carry out or supervise RBW. It is also an offense to knowingly engage an unlicensed person to carry out or supervise restricted building work.<\/p>\n<h3>It\u2019s Restricted Building Work (RBW) if it affects:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>the primary structure (construction or alteration). This is all the structural elements of the building that contribute to resisting vertical and horizontal loads<\/li>\n<li>external moisture management systems (construction or alteration). These are the building elements and systems which prevent the ingress of external moisture and help control moisture within the building fabric<\/li>\n<li>fire safety systems (design) \u2013 the building elements intended to protect people and property from fire<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>It\u2019s not\u00a0Restricted Building Work (RBW) if it:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>doesn\u2019t need a building consent<\/li>\n<li>doesn\u2019t involve work to the home\u2019s primary structure, weather tightness or design of fire safety systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/builderscrack.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/RBW-verdict.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3029 size-full\" title=\"Restricted Building Work\" src=\"https:\/\/builderscrack.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/RBW-verdict.gif\" alt=\"Restricted Building Work\" width=\"700\" height=\"376\" \/><\/a>If you\u2019re an owner-builder or considering DIY, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.business.govt.nz\/lbp\/do-i-need-a-lbp\/when-you-need-an-lbp\/diy\">check the LBP website<\/a> so you know what\u2019s expected of you.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Choosing a tradesperson\" href=\"https:\/\/builderscrack.co.nz\/blog\/faq\/homeowners\/choosing-a-tradesperson\/\">Choosing a registered tradesman<\/a> may not be enough to guarantee great work, so unless you\u2019re doing a \u00a0small job, it\u2019s important to get 3 quotes.
