Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral fibre, which is found in older homes. It is hazardous to health if exposed to inhalable fibres.<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Friable asbestos may only be removed by a tradesperson holding a certificate of competence for restricted work.<\/p>\n<p>The tradesperson must notify the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dol.govt.nz\/\">Department of Labour <\/a>of the work being carried out and certain procedures must be followed to ensure that workers and others in the area are not exposed to fibres.<\/p>\n<h3>Asbestos\u00a0removalists may:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Isolate or enclose the affected area<\/li>\n<li>Erect warning signs<\/li>\n<li>Use exhaust extraction systems<\/li>\n<li>Include decontamination procedures<\/li>\n<li>Monitor fibre concentrations in the air<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Respiratory and personal protection must be used, and asbestos waste must be disposed of at a designated refuse site.<\/p>\n<p>These rules do not apply in the case of removal in private homes. Homeowners are advised to <a href=\"http:\/\/builderscrack.co.nz\/post-job\">hire an approved asbestos removalist<\/a> rather than do it alone.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/builderscrack.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/asbestos3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1645 size-medium\" title=\"asbestos removalists\" src=\"https:\/\/builderscrack.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/asbestos3-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"asbestos removalists\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a>Products that are known to contain asbestos include;
