New Zealanders typically live in a home with either wooden or aluminium windows. These two types of joinery are well respected by both builders and homeowners alike. However, people have their favourites and with good reasons. That’s because there are pros and cons for both aluminium and wooden joinery. Ultimately the decision rests with you in choosing the joinery type best for your home.

The tiny home movement has definitely come to New Zealand, especially since the Christchurch earthquakes which have seen kiwis both living out of and doing business out of remodelled containers. But why has the tiny house movement gained so much traction and caused excitement lately? Is it a genuine trend that’s both socially and economically advantageous? Or is it just the next not-so-big thing in house design?
Since the mid 1940s we’ve seen the average size of a kiwi home almost double to approx 200m2. But at the same time the number of people per household has shrunk to 2.5 and is still shrinking. So we’ve often now got half as many people living in twice as much space as our parents or grandparents did.

Christmas is just around the corner. If you’ve been putting off getting home maintenance tasks done around your home over winter, you’ll be pleased to know that Builderscrack has qualified tradespeople available now to consult with you, or get a free online estimate.
Tune up your air conditioning: Prevent emergencies and be safe by hiring a tradie to tune up your air conditioning. Not only will this keep it running and your summer electricity bills low, but a tradie will check that there are no fire hazards with faulty wiring.
Roof check: Now is a great time to inspect the roof for problems. The rain has subsided so there are more opportunities to hire a professional roofing contractor to find any small problems before they get bigger.
Remember that it can be dangerous to get up on the roof. So hiring a specialised gutter cleaning company is a great idea.
Window check: The key to successful window maintenance is to routinely check the sealants. It’s a good idea to inspect weather-stripping for any faults and replace it immediately if there is an issue.
Pressure wash: The best way to maintain your home’s exterior is to clean it with a safe pressure wash. This will remove dirt, stains and mildew. Before washing make sure you cover plants, electrical outlets and windows to avoid any mishaps.
That’s just a few home maintenance tasks you can get done now before Christmas madness descends upon us. If you’re not sure what needs doing around the house, our tradies can help. Experienced in a wide range of specialities, they can advise you what else may need doing to keep your home in tip top condition this summer.

It’s true that the process doesn’t always involve complex skills and some of us can manage furniture repair at home just by investing a little time and effort in the job. (more…)
When starting home renovations or maintenance, decide whether you need to hire a Licensed Building Practitioner to carry out restricted building work (RBW). We’ve some easy to follow guidelines here but we also recommend that you check the LBP website.
As the homeowner, you must make certain that the people you hire are licensed to do the work. First of all, you must verify they hold a valid license. Don’t take their word for it. Ask to see their photo ID and check their details against the public register. (more…)
